Abuja, Nigeria: The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed a political reconciliation with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, following a peace meeting facilitated by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Thursday night.
Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Wike announced that both parties had agreed to end months of political hostility and unite for the progress of Rivers State.
“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us. We are members of the same political family,” Wike stated.
Describing the truce as definitive, he acknowledged the protracted nature of the crisis but noted that it had now been conclusively resolved. “Just like in every human relationship, there can be disagreements. But this has now been settled. We have come to inform Mr. President that the matter is resolved. For me, everything is over,” he said.
Wike urged supporters across the political spectrum to embrace peace and collaboration, adding, “There’s no more acrimony. Everyone should work together.”
Governor Fubara also confirmed the reconciliation, describing the development as a divine intervention and a significant turning point for Rivers State.
“For me, it’s a day to thank Almighty God. What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, with the help of Mr. President and our leaders, peace has returned,” Fubara said.
He pledged to uphold the fragile peace achieved and committed to working towards its sustainability. “We’ll do everything within our power to maintain it,” he assured.
The conflict between Wike and Fubara, his political protégé, began shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023. The feud intensified in October when lawmakers aligned with Wike initiated impeachment proceedings against Fubara, leading to the controversial demolition of the state assembly complex and the relocation of legislative activities.
The prolonged political standoff crippled governance in the state and escalated tensions. In December 2023, President Tinubu brokered an initial peace deal, which temporarily eased tensions and led to the appointment of Wike’s allies into key positions. However, the truce collapsed, prompting President Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on March 18, 2025.
The declaration suspended Fubara’s executive powers for six months, citing escalating insecurity and administrative breakdown. A sole administrator, former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), was subsequently appointed to oversee the state’s affairs.
The latest reconciliation, if sustained, may mark a new phase of political stability and governance in Rivers State.
