In a bold move aimed at addressing corruption in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has pronounced the ‘Park and Pay’ policy in Abuja illegal.
Speaking during a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday to mark his first year in office, Wike highlighted that the controversial scheme has been diverting government funds under the guise of a legitimate operation. The issue was brought to his attention by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), who raised concerns about the involvement of private consultants profiting from the policy.
“A Senior Advocate informed me of a scheme siphoning government funds under the pretense of legality,” Wike explained. “If these things aren’t brought to our notice, we might remain unaware. We can’t be everywhere.”
The minister recalled a specific instance where the Senior Advocate reported that individuals, claiming to represent the Transport Secretariat, attempted to confiscate vehicles under the ‘Park and Pay’ policy. Wike intervened directly by speaking to one of the individuals involved, leading him to question the legitimacy of the operation.
“I had no prior knowledge of such operations,” Wike remarked. “Upon investigation, I discovered that there are agreements where private consultants collect 80% of the revenue, leaving only 20% for the FCT administration.”
Wike described the arrangement as illegal and promised to take swift action to dismantle the fraudulent scheme. “This is unlawful, and we are moving to address it immediately. Without that phone call, we wouldn’t have been aware of these activities,” he concluded.
