Liverpool, England — Liverpool manager Arne Slot has opened up about the club’s pursuit of Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi, explaining what made him an ideal candidate for strengthening their midfield.
At the time, Slot inherited a strong squad and saw Zubimendi as the missing piece to reinforce the midfield, making the team even stronger.
The player appeared determined to join Liverpool, and the club was reportedly prepared to trigger his full release clause. The final step was to deposit the transfer fee with La Liga. However, Zubimendi’s manager convinced him to stay at Real Sociedad, leading to his rejection of Liverpool’s offer.
A year later, Zubimendi secured a move to Premier League side Arsenal. Meanwhile, Liverpool moved forward and even clinched the Premier League title last season.
This upcoming fixture between Arsenal and Liverpool gains extra spice, as Zubimendi faces his former suitors in a compelling showdown.
Ahead of the game, Slot shared via The Independent: “What attracted us was his composure on the ball and deep understanding of the game. We expected to control possession heavily every match, so having someone in front of our defense comfortable with the ball would be an excellent fit.”
Already showing promise at Arsenal, Zubimendi’s presence is pivotal in providing stability, creativity, and control in midfield as the Gunners prepare to challenge Liverpool’s dominance.
