London, UK — West Ham United has parted ways with head coach Julen Lopetegui following a string of disappointing results in the Premier League.
The decision comes on the heels of a 4-1 defeat to Manchester City, leaving the Hammers in 14th place on the league table. Lopetegui, who was appointed in May to replace David Moyes, struggled to meet the club’s expectations despite a summer transfer budget exceeding £130 million.
During his tenure, Lopetegui managed just six wins in 20 league matches. He now becomes the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season, joining Erik ten Hag, Steve Cooper, Gary O’Neil, and Russell Martin on the list of departures.
In a statement released on its official website, West Ham confirmed the decision, stating: “The first half of the 2024/25 season has not aligned with the Club’s ambitions, and the Club has therefore taken action in line with its objectives.”
The club also announced the immediate departure of Lopetegui’s backroom staff, including Assistant Head Coach Pablo Sanz, Head of Performance Oscar Caro, Head Analyst Juan Vicente Peinado, Fitness Coach Borja De Alba, and Technical Coach Edu Rubio.
The board expressed gratitude to Lopetegui and his team for their contributions, wishing them success in their future endeavors.
Looking ahead, West Ham confirmed that former Chelsea and Brighton manager Graham Potter will replace Lopetegui. Potter is expected to bring a fresh perspective as the club seeks to improve its league performance.
The Hammers’ next challenge will be an FA Cup clash against Aston Villa on January 10, as Potter begins his tenure with hopes of revitalizing the team.
