Warri Refinery Undergoing Scheduled Maintenance—NNPC Ltd

Abuja, Nigeria  — The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has confirmed that ongoing activities at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC) are part of routine maintenance to enhance efficiency and ensure steady operations.

NNPC Ltd’s Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, dismissed reports of an explosion at the refinery, clarifying that the current operational adjustments were necessary interventions on select equipment.

According to Soneye, operations in WRPC’s Area 1 were temporarily scaled down to address field instrument issues affecting stable production. He assured that the maintenance, which commenced on January 25, 2025, is progressing as scheduled, with full operations expected to resume within days.

The refinery has continued Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) loading at an average of eight trucks per day over the past 11 days, ensuring steady supply despite reduced activity. Soneye reaffirmed NNPC Ltd’s commitment to uninterrupted product distribution and expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their patience.

“The company remains dedicated to operational reliability and product availability. We appreciate stakeholders’ cooperation as we finalize these essential maintenance efforts,” he stated.

WRPC, which restarted operations about a month ago, resumed work shortly after NNPC Ltd revived the 60,000-barrels-per-day Port Harcourt Refinery in November 2024. The Warri refinery plays a crucial role in producing Straight Run Kerosene (SRK), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Naphtha.
