Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has revealed that he deliberately avoided watching the final match of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) due to the overwhelming tension, stating he didn’t want to risk raising his blood pressure.
The President made the remark on Monday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, during a reception in honour of the Super Falcons, who recently secured their 12th WAFCON title after a hard-fought victory over South Africa.
Recalling the emotionally charged moments of the match, Tinubu said,
“I didn’t want to watch the match initially because I didn’t want high blood pressure. My wife was in the kitchen cooking, then suddenly ran out to tell me, ‘We’ve won!’”
His comment drew laughter and applause from attendees, reflecting the emotional investment many Nigerians had in the final.
The President commended the players for making the nation proud and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting Nigerian athletes on the global stage.
The victory further solidifies the Super Falcons’ dominance in African women’s football, bringing joy to millions across the country.
