Nigeria – Fresh details have emerged on why renowned gospel singer, Tope Alabi, turned down a performance at the surprise birthday celebration of Nollywood actress, Liz Anjorin.

According to filmmaker and author Dr. Oreofe Williams, who facilitated the connection between Alabi and the organizers, the singer was not informed of the celebrant’s identity prior to the event. Williams revealed that the arrangement was presented as a surprise performance for a cherished individual, but no names were mentioned during negotiations.
Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji Alabi, reportedly agreed to the performance at a significantly reduced fee of N2.5 million, following Dr. Williams’ intervention. However, upon arriving at the venue and discovering that the celebrant was Liz Anjorin, Tope Alabi chose to remain in her car and ultimately refused to perform, citing personal reasons.
The singer and her team felt manipulated and denied the “privilege of choice by conscience,” having been misled by the lack of transparency surrounding the event. They promptly returned the full payment of N2.5 million to the organizers.
In response, Liz Anjorin took to social media to criticize Tope Alabi’s decision, stating that she would not be bullied. The actress also shared receipts confirming the payment made for the performance.
Dr. Williams defended the Alabis, describing the situation as an “unfortunate conundrum.” He questioned the motive behind concealing the celebrant’s identity and emphasized that ethical practices such as integrity, transparency, and accountability are vital to maintaining trust in business relationships.
He clarified that the decision to pull out of the event was not based on hostility toward the celebrant or anyone at the venue but stemmed from the perceived deception in the arrangement.
