US-Nigeria Open Skies Air Transport Agreement Comes into Effect

The US-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement, which had been provisionally applied since 2000, officially came into effect on May 13, 2024.

According to a statement from the US Embassy in Abuja, this bilateral agreement establishes a modern civil aviation relationship with Nigeria, aligning with the US Open Skies international aviation policy and ensuring adherence to high standards of aviation safety and security.

The agreement includes provisions for unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, open route rights, a liberal charter regime, and open code-sharing opportunities.

“This agreement with Nigeria marks a significant advancement in liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa. It further strengthens our robust economic and commercial partnership, fosters people-to-people connections, and creates new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers,” the statement noted.

The agreement enables air carriers to offer more affordable, convenient, and efficient air services to travelers and shippers, thereby promoting tourism and commerce.
