Ursula von der Leyen Reelected as European Commission President

Ursula von der Leyen has been re-elected as president of the European Commission after securing a decisive majority in a secret ballot conducted by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The vote, held in Strasbourg on Thursday, saw von der Leyen receive the support of 401 MEPs, surpassing the required threshold by 41 votes.

Following her re-election, von der Leyen will continue to lead the European Union for another five years. Expressing her gratitude and emotion, she described the outcome as a testament to strong confidence in her leadership.

In her remarks to the press, von der Leyen emphasized the critical need for Europe to defend its democracy amidst threats from both internal and external sources. This sentiment echoed her earlier speech to the Parliament, where she condemned “demagogues and extremists” and pledged to work with all democratic forces within the legislative body.

Ahead of the vote, von der Leyen committed to bolstering European defense through increased military expenditure and reaffirmed her dedication to meeting climate targets. Reflecting on her previous term, she urged for continued collaboration to achieve greater strength and progress.

Her candidacy had received approval at an EU leaders’ summit last month, though not unanimously. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof praised von der Leyen’s knowledge, experience, and leadership during challenging times, while French President Emmanuel Macron lauded her re-election as a step towards a more sovereign, competitive, and democratic Europe.
