Abeokuta, Nigeria — A fire outbreak disrupted activities at the Alake Sports Complex, venue of the ongoing Gateway Games 2024, following a diesel truck explosion on Tuesday afternoon.
The incident, which occurred while the truck was refueling a generator, resulted in panic across the vicinity, affecting several shops and a kiosk near the facility’s entrance.
According to eyewitness accounts, the blaze caused significant damage to small businesses in the area, leaving traders counting their losses.
Although no fatalities were recorded, the truck driver sustained injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
Officials of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) swiftly arrived at the scene once the fire was extinguished, assuring affected traders that their concerns would be addressed.
A committee member, who spoke anonymously, expressed gratitude for the absence of casualties. “We’ve started documenting losses and will ensure that those affected are supported accordingly,” he said.
Firefighters confirmed receiving the emergency alert at exactly 3:29 p.m. and were able to promptly contain the fire before it escalated.
Despite the disruption, activities at the sports complex continued unhindered. Handball matches resumed shortly after, while badminton and squash events proceeded as scheduled.
The organisers of the 2024 National Sports Festival have since pledged to assist traders impacted by the fire, reiterating their commitment to ensuring a successful and inclusive event for all participants.
