University of Ibadan Closes Campus Amid Student Protests Over Tuition Fee Hike

In response to ongoing protests and a lecture boycott by students of the University of Ibadan over a recent increase in tuition fees, the university management has ordered all students to vacate the campus for a three-week break.

A circular issued by the university’s Registrar, G.O. Saliu, stated, “Following a meeting between the university management and the leadership of the students’ union, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the Senate, has approved a three-week break for all students, effective from Saturday, August 31, 2024, to September 20, 2024. Hostels will reopen at 12 noon on Friday, September 20.”

The circular further detailed that the break will allow students sufficient time to complete their online registration process. It noted that the 2023/2024 first semester examinations will commence on Monday, September 23, 2024, and the registration period will close on Friday, September 20, 2024.

Students were advised that there will be no reopening of the portal for fee payments or course registrations after the September 20 deadline. The statement also emphasized that students who fail to complete their registration on time will not be permitted to participate in the examinations.

“All students are required to leave the university campus by 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 31, 2024. This directive must be strictly followed,” the registrar concluded.
