UNIOSUN Hosts Annual College Lecture as Senator Olalere Charts Economic Path for Nigeria’s Future

Ikire, Osun State — The Annual College Lecture of Osun State University, Ikire Campus, held on June 5, 2025, brought together esteemed scholars, policymakers, and students in a landmark event centered on Nigeria’s evolving role in the global economy.

The event was hosted under the distinguished leadership of the Chief Host, Prof. Odunayo Clement Adebooye, Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University, and Prof. Mikail Folorunsho, Provost of the College of Humanities and Culture, who served as the official Host.

Masterfully compered by Mr. Faleyinmu Matthew, the ceremony welcomed an array of dignitaries including senior academics, security personnel, the Akire Council, Lere Vanguard members, and prominent guests from across academic, political, and civic institutions. The atmosphere was enriched by a cultural presentation from the University’s Theatre Arts students.

The highlight of the event was the keynote address delivered by Akogun Dr. Senator Olalere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, representing the Osun West Senatorial District. Speaking on the theme “Nigeria in a Changing Global Order: Opportunities and Challenges in the Wake of U.S. Economic Policy Reforms,” the senator offered a critical analysis of how global economic shifts, especially those influenced by U.S. policies on renewable energy and technological transition, affect Nigeria’s economic prospects.

Senator Oyewumi cautioned against over-reliance on oil and stressed the urgent need for Nigeria to reposition its economy through skills acquisition, technology innovation, agriculture, health, and creative industries. He proposed stronger regional trade, strategic partnerships with global blocs like BRICS and the EU, and internal policy reforms as pathways to resilience.

He also underscored the importance of addressing systemic governance challenges, improving infrastructure, and leveraging the potential of Nigeria’s youth. According to him, academic institutions, civil society, and the private sector have vital roles to play in steering the nation towards sustainable development.

In a powerful close to his address, the senator urged a collective re-imagination of Nigeria — as a nation ready to embrace innovation, diversify its economy, and thrive in a competitive global landscape.

Responding to the lecture, Prof. Temitope Balogun, representing the Vice-Chancellor, presented the university’s needs, including staff accommodations and improved lecture facilities. In a heartening gesture, Senator Oyewumi pledged ongoing support for the Ikire Campus, announcing that projects will now be included annually in the National Assembly’s budget. He also shared progress on campus fencing and revealed federal approval for establishing a National Open University center in Ikire.

Further inspiring the academic community, Senator Oyewumi introduced the Senator Lere Oyewumi Award, to be presented yearly to the top three performing students, including a cash prize for the overall best student.

The event concluded with an award presentation to Senator Oyewumi in recognition of his impactful lecture and commitment to educational advancement. The award was presented by Prof. Felix Olatunji, Dean of the Faculty of Culture, alongside university dignitaries.

Mrs. Akindele, Dean of Student Affairs and Chairperson of the College Lecture Committee, gave the final vote of thanks, closing the day on a note of gratitude and renewed hope for the university and the nation.
