UNICEF, Enugu State unite to Combat Plastic Pollution

Enugu, Nigeria — In commemoration of World Environment Day 2025, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reaffirmed its partnership with state governments within the Enugu Field Office jurisdiction to address the growing threat of plastic waste.

The announcement was made during a media dialogue held in Enugu, where Juliet Chiluwe, Chief of the UNICEF Enugu Field Office, underscored the severe environmental impact of plastic pollution on aquatic life, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem health.

“Eliminating plastic pollution is crucial for safeguarding our marine life, restoring ecosystems, and preserving biodiversity,” Chiluwe said.

She disclosed that UNICEF, in synergy with local authorities, schools, and civil society, has launched an extensive tree-planting campaign to encourage greener cities and reduce carbon emissions—steps aimed at environmental renewal and climate resilience.

Also speaking at the event, UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Specialist, Rebecca Bolatito Gabriel, advocated for stringent laws to curb the use of single-use plastic bags. She highlighted the dangers posed by improper plastic disposal, which disrupts habitats and contributes to ecological degradation.

Gabriel reiterated UNICEF’s dedication to partnering with the media to enhance public awareness and advocacy on plastic pollution.

Representing the Enugu State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Nnamdi Arum confirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to supporting UNICEF’s efforts for a cleaner, sustainable environment.
