UNICEF criticizes significant lack of infrastructure in schools in northern Nigeria.

UNICEF recently highlighted the concerning high level of infrastructural deficiencies, physical instability, and psychological challenges in schools in northern Nigeria.

A 2023 survey conducted by the UN agency revealed significant underperformance in critical areas such as infrastructure, Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH), and student nutrition.

States like Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto, and Adamawa were identified as having poor performance across various Safe Schools standards.

During a State Level sensitization meeting in Bauchi organized by the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in partnership with UNICEF, Abdulrahman Ibrahim, the UNICEF Education Specialist, expressed worry over the state of safe schools in the region.

The survey conducted in 2023 highlighted the urgent need for attention from all stakeholders to address the prevalent issues affecting students’ safety and well-being in schools.

Abdulrahman Ibrahim emphasized the importance of providing children with a designated Safe School Focal Officer to ensure they have an avenue to report any concerns or issues they may encounter in their school environment.

He noted that the lack of reporting channels has contributed to the insecurity and instability experienced by students, hindering their access to quality education.

Furthermore, Saleh Muhammad, an Independent Education System Strengthening Consultant, stressed the ongoing challenges facing children’s right to education in Nigeria, including conflicts, hostilities, and climate-related hazards that continue to disrupt learning and result in high numbers of out-of-school children.

UNICEF has pledged to support the government in creating safe and conducive learning environments in schools across the state to address these issues and ensure children can access education in a secure setting.
