The Rule of Law and Empowerment Initiative, also known as Partners West Africa Nigeria (PWAN), has underscored the importance of raising public awareness about the Nigerian Police Act 2020. The organization emphasizes that understanding this legislation is crucial for promoting accountability, enhancing police governance, and safeguarding citizens’ rights. To achieve this, PWAN has organized town hall meetings in various cities to engage stakeholders and deepen public understanding of the Act. According to PWAN’s Executive Director, Kemi Okenyodo, many citizens remain unaware of their rights under the Act, which can lead to a lack of confidence in holding police officers accountable for misconduct or abuses of power .
The Nigerian Police Act 2020, signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2020, replaced the outdated Police Act of 2004. This comprehensive revision addresses irregularities and modernizes provisions to suit current realities. Key sections of the Act highlight significant reforms, including the prohibition of arrest in lieu, mandates for informing suspects of their rights, and humane treatment protocols. Despite its significance, public awareness of the Act remains low, prompting civil society organizations to bridge the knowledge gap.
