The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has introduced a new initiative aimed at addressing hunger, food shortages, and rising prices in Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Chad, Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, and Niger.
A statement on the WFP’s website highlighted that this initiative is structured to address the immediate food and nutrition needs of those facing acute hunger in the region.
“The alarming hunger crisis in West and Central Africa necessitates urgent transformative solutions to assist vulnerable families in meeting their immediate food needs and fostering a brighter future,” stated Chris Nikoi, WFP’s Regional Director for Western Africa.
Nikoi emphasized the necessity of maintaining emergency responses for those in dire need while advocating for increased investment in sustainable solutions. These solutions encompass enhancing food security, boosting agricultural productivity, improving families’ purchasing power, and mitigating economic and climate-related shocks.
The WFP’s statement underscored that the region’s hunger and nutrition crises are driven by a combination of conflicts, high food prices, and the climate crisis.
Economic disruptions, high inflation, reduced economic activities, depreciating national currencies, and rising fuel and agricultural input costs have severely impacted people, especially in Nigeria, Ghana, and Sierra Leone.
