The United Nations has raised alarms about the potential outbreak of cholera in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Maiduguri, Borno State, following severe flooding in the area.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the organization expressed concern over the contamination of water sources, which increases the risk of waterborne diseases, particularly cholera. The statement highlighted the urgent need for clean water, food, shelter, and other essential resources for those affected by the floods.
OCHA also underscored the importance of providing protection and care for vulnerable groups, including unaccompanied children, the elderly, and individuals with disabilities, in order to safeguard them from the looming health crisis. Additionally, the agency called for the provision of non-food items and preventive measures to avert disease outbreaks in overcrowded IDP camps.
The floods have already impacted nutrition stabilization centers treating severely malnourished children in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Areas (LGAs). Areas such as Dalwa in Damboa LGA, as well as Bama and Gwoza LGAs, have also been affected.
Prior to the latest round of flash floods, over 123,000 people in Borno State had already been affected by flooding and windstorms since August, according to the statement.
