United States of America, Nigeria _ The UK government has launched a nationwide crackdown on illegal working, conducting a record 823 workplace inspections in January, a 48% increase from last year.
The raids, primarily targeting nail bars, restaurants, and grocery warehouses, resulted in 609 arrests, up 73% from January 2023.
While the government claims the measures aim to deter illegal work and protect jobs for legal residents, critics argue that the crackdown disproportionately affects low-income migrant workers, who are often exploited in poor working conditions. Migrant advocacy groups warn that the focus on arrests and deportations overlooks deeper issues like labor exploitation and human rights concerns. The UK’s broader immigration strategy includes expanding law enforcement powers, running global awareness campaigns, and hosting an international Border Security Summit in March.
