Abuja, Nigeria — The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Ugandan government have deepened ties to enhance transparency and accountability in tracking government-funded projects.
This partnership was underscored during a study visit by Uganda’s Parliamentary Budget Committee to the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, where both parties explored strategies for effective project monitoring.
Welcoming the delegation, ICPC Chairman Dr. Musa Aliyu, represented by the Commission’s Secretary, Mr. Clifford Oparaodu, highlighted the importance of project tracking in curbing corruption and ensuring responsible governance. He noted that Nigeria’s proactive approach has led to significant recoveries and improvements in project implementation.
“Tracking public projects demands expertise, especially in Africa, where local initiatives are sometimes misappropriated,” Oparaodu stated. “This remains a key area of concern, and we are open to collaborations that foster knowledge sharing and best practices.”
Leading the Ugandan delegation, Mr. Remigio Achia, Vice Chairman of the Parliamentary Budget Committee, expressed admiration for Nigeria’s tracking framework. He disclosed that Uganda is in the process of reinstating constituency project funds and is keen on implementing measures that prevent mismanagement.
“These funds were previously removed from Uganda’s budget, but as we prepare to reinstate them, studying ICPC’s model will help ensure they directly benefit citizens,” Achia explained.
The visit featured an insightful presentation by Mr. Jimoh Sulahiman, ICPC’s Deputy Director and Head of the Constituency and Executive Project Tracking Initiative (CEPTi). His session, titled ‘CEPTi as a Vehicle for Good Governance,’ detailed Nigeria’s project monitoring system and its role in improving transparency nationwide.
The engagement is expected to inform Uganda’s development of a similar initiative, fostering greater accountability and ensuring public projects are effectively executed for national development.
