The Lagos State Police Command has reported the arrest of two women, Ujunwa Una and Chinelo Igbechionwu, for allegedly selling newborn babies.
The arrests were made by patrol officers from the Ojodu Division stationed at Berger bus stop, based on a tip-off from a concerned citizen.
The suspects were apprehended with two six-day-old baby girls while traveling from Abia State to Lagos on September 9, 2024.
Investigations revealed that the women were transporting the babies to a nurse in Lagos, as arranged by the biological mother of the infants. The suspects admitted to receiving N150,000 for conveying the babies, explaining that the mother sold them because she was unable to provide proper care.
After their confession, the case was transferred to the Gender Unit of the Command, and the newborns were placed in a motherless babies’ home for care and medical evaluation. The police indicated that efforts are underway to apprehend other individuals involved in the illicit trade of newborns.
SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police spokesman, confirmed that the arrested women were arraigned on Thursday as the investigation continues.
The authorities are focused on bringing all culprits to justice and ensuring the well-being of the trafficked infants.
