Two security operatives have been killed amid the ongoing local government crisis in Rivers State.
The fatalities occurred on Tuesday in Omuma Local Government Area during an invasion of the council headquarters in Eberi-Omuma. Details of the incident remain unclear.
Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed the deaths of a police officer and a vigilante operative during a broadcast on national television.
Earlier on Tuesday, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara directed administrative heads in the state’s 23 local government areas to assume control following the expiration of the elected council chairmen’s three-year terms on Monday. However, 21 of the outgoing council chairmen have refused to hand over their positions, leading to political unrest in the state.
