TUC Urges Federal Government to Clear Outstanding Wage Award

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has called on the Federal Government to settle the outstanding three-month wage award to foster a more harmonious relationship between the government and labor unions.

TUC President, Comrade Festus Osifo, made the appeal during the 7th Registrar of Trade Unions Workshop held in Abuja. Represented by TUC Vice President, Tommy Okon, Osifo emphasized the need for the government to prioritize workers’ welfare amid prevailing economic challenges.

“The government must demonstrate commitment to easing the economic burden on workers by addressing these wage issues promptly,” Osifo stated.

In response, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Mohammad Dingyadi, assured attendees that the government would address the concerns raised, including the wage award and the implementation of the new minimum wage.

“We are committed to supporting the labor sector with top-quality, globally aligned service delivery and ensuring all government policies are reviewed, implemented, and enforced in line with our mandate,” Dingyadi affirmed.

The minister also highlighted plans to enhance capacity building, strengthen labor institutions, ensure consistent policy implementation, and establish a robust occupational safety and health framework for workers.

John Nyamali, a director overseeing the office of the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Labour and Employment, expressed optimism that the workshop would develop effective strategies to resolve labor-related issues.

“The workshop is a platform to formulate actionable solutions to the challenges faced by the labor sector,” Nyamali remarked.

The TUC’s appeal and the government’s assurances come amid ongoing efforts to address industrial concerns and improve the welfare of Nigerian workers.
