Tsamiya Dry Port Launches Kano Clearing Office to Boost Northern Trade

The newly opened Tsamiya Dry Port in Kebbi State has established a clearing office in Kano to enhance trade for businesspeople in Northern Nigeria.

During the inauguration of the Kano office on Wednesday, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adeniyi, represented by the Zone B Comptroller, ACG Sambo Dangaladima, highlighted the event as a significant step towards the re-opening of the Segbana-Tsamiya border in Kebbi State.

Adeniyi noted that in May 2024, a high-level Nigerian delegation met with officials from Benin Republic to discuss key issues regarding the border’s reopening. The talks centered on logistics, security, and the economic impact, with the aim of expediting the operationalization of the border post.

“The establishment of this trade office in Kano, a critical commercial hub, underscores its role as a key center for commerce and emphasizes the need to streamline business processes in the region,” Dangaladima said. He added that the office would also support local industries by creating an export terminal, aligning with the federal government’s broader goals of boosting food security and strengthening economic ties within and beyond Nigeria’s borders.

Reaffirming the NCS’s commitment to enforcing government policies to drive economic growth, Dangaladima urged the business community to ensure compliance by paying taxes and conducting business with integrity.

In his remarks, Benin’s Director of Customs, Col. Idriso Imorou, assured that goods passing through the Tsamiya border would be safeguarded and processed without unnecessary delays. He emphasized the importance of a smooth working relationship between the customs services of both countries to facilitate seamless trade.

Col. Imorou also called on the presidents of both Nigeria and Benin to consider reducing taxes on goods to alleviate the burden on citizens and promote socio-economic development.

The Kano clearing office aims to support businesses by enabling goods from Kano to be cleared more efficiently in Cotonou, Benin Republic. This initiative is expected to enhance cross-border trade, reduce delays, and lower costs for importers and exporters using Cotonou’s ports.
