Abu Dhabi, UAE — U.S. President Donald Trump has opted out of attending a key peace summit in Turkey aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, choosing instead to return to Washington to meet his newborn grandchild.
The announcement came during an event in the United Arab Emirates, where Trump revealed that his daughter, Tiffany Trump, had recently given birth. Expressing his excitement, Trump stated he was eager to be with his family during the special moment.
“I should have left last night, but I didn’t want to let down my hosts here in Abu Dhabi,” Trump said. “Now, I’ll be heading back to see my new grandchild.”
Although he had initially kept open the possibility of a last-minute appearance at the Turkey summit, Trump ultimately decided against attending. The talks are part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine, but Trump reiterated his belief that meaningful progress could not be made without a personal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“We need to get it done. We’re going to get it done,” Trump emphasized, citing alarming casualty figures. “About 5,000 young people are dying every week—that’s got to stop.”
Trump confirmed his intent to meet Putin “as soon as it can be arranged,” suggesting that direct diplomacy remains his preferred approach to resolving the crisis.
