Trump Asserts Harris Will Be Easier to Defeat Than Biden

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump declared on Sunday that Vice President Kamala Harris would be easier to defeat in the upcoming November election compared to Democratic President Joe Biden, who announced earlier that day he would not seek re-election.

Trump made these remarks on CNN shortly after Biden revealed his decision to step aside as the Democratic candidate. Following the announcement, Trump and his campaign criticized both Biden and Harris on social media, asserting Biden was unfit to continue as president.

Biden ended his re-election bid after fellow Democrats expressed concerns about his mental fitness and ability to defeat Trump. Subsequently, Biden endorsed Harris as his successor for the party’s nomination.

Doubts about Biden’s re-election prospects intensified following a lackluster performance in a televised debate against Trump last month. On his Truth Social platform, Trump commented that Biden “was not fit to run for president and is certainly not fit to serve.”

Top Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, echoed Trump’s sentiments, with Johnson specifically urging Biden to resign if he deemed himself unfit to continue as the Democratic candidate. Trump added on Truth Social, “We will suffer greatly because of his (Biden’s) presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly.”

Although Trump and Biden were closely matched in polls, some post-debate surveys showed Trump slightly ahead. A source familiar with the Trump campaign’s strategy said discussions had already begun on how to reallocate resources in light of Biden’s potential withdrawal from the race. This shift would necessitate reevaluating where to spend advertising dollars and deploy campaign assets.

Publicly, Trump’s campaign advisers have expressed confidence in facing Harris, suggesting they can link her to Biden’s record, particularly on issues like immigration and inflation. They plan to portray Harris and other potential Democratic candidates as more left-leaning than Biden on various policies.

In a statement following Biden’s withdrawal, the Trump campaign labeled Harris as Biden’s “enabler in chief,” asserting there was no distinction between their records. The Republican National Committee also released a video on Sunday criticizing Harris’s handling of immigration policies, accusing her of neglect.

Amid speculation that Harris might replace Biden, Trump’s campaign and allies have preemptively attacked her politically. In March 2021, Biden assigned Harris to lead efforts with Mexico and Central American countries to address illegal immigration, a move Republicans have used to criticize her handling of the border crisis, despite her not being directly responsible for securing the border.
