Africa – Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has urged African nations to see former US President Donald Trump’s decision to halt foreign aid as a call to action.
Speaking recently at the East Africa Region Global Health Security Summit 2025, Kenyatta emphasised that Africa must focus on self-reliance and effectively utilise its resources.
The ex-president dismissed the outrage over Trump’s policy shift, arguing that African nations should stop depending on foreign assistance.
“I saw some people the other day crying about Trump’s decision to halt foreign aid to African nations. Why are they crying? It is not your government and it is definitely not your country. He has no reason to give you anything, you do not pay taxes in America,” Kenyatta stated.
He further urged African nations to reassess their priorities: “This is a wake-up call to Africa to ask what we can do to help ourselves instead of crying. We should ask ourselves what we are going to do to support ourselves. It is time for us to use our resources for the right thing because we are the ones using these resources for the wrong things.”
All US agencies managing foreign development aid have received orders to pause the distribution of funds since Trump’s inauguration on January 20.

For instance, the US government has suspended financial support for HIV treatment programmes in Nigeria and other developing countries.
This decision has led to a 90-day halt in disbursements from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a US initiative providing HIV/AIDS treatment across Africa and other regions.
