Truck Carrying Waste Topples Off Lagos Bridge, kills Tricycle Rider

Edited by Afolabi Hannah

A tragic event unfolded in Lagos’s Surulere district when a tricycle operator was killed in an accident involving a garbage collection vehicle. The incident was reported and took place on Tuesday evening. The garbage truck, belonging to the Lagos State Waste Management Authority, was moving across the Shitta overpass when it malfunctioned. This mechanical failure caused the driver to lose control, leading to a collision with a Kia Salon car on the bridge.

Following the collision, the compacting section of the garbage truck became detached and fell off the overpass, landing on a small bus and the tricycle below. Miraculously, about seven passengers in the bus survived the crash. Unfortunately, the tricycle rider was killed on impact.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed their response to the emergency, arriving at the scene at approximately 10:20 pm. The agency’s head, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, reported that the refuse truck’s mechanical issue was the cause of the accident involving multiple vehicles. The deceased tricycle rider’s body was recovered and taken to the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba for necessary procedures.

The aftermath of the accident saw the involved vehicles being removed to the Iponri Police Station for further investigation, while the refuse truck was taken to LASEMA’s yard in Ijora. The responders to the scene included teams from LASEMA, LASAMBUS, LASTMA, local police, and officers from the Iponri Police Station.
