The National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal for Sokoto/Zamfara States, sitting in Sokoto, has annulled the election of Umar Yusuf Yabo Danmaje, a member of the House of Representatives representing Yabo/Shagari federal constituency in Sokoto State.
In its ruling on Monday, the Tribunal also ordered Danmaje to pay N500,000 in damages to the petitioner for the costs incurred in challenging his election.
The unanimous judgment, delivered by Tribunal Chairman Justice Ashu A. Ewah, declared Danmaje’s election null and void. The tribunal found that the election, conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in 2023 and rerun on February 3, 2024, was compromised by malpractices in several polling units, rendering the results inconclusive.
The Tribunal also directed INEC to withdraw the Certificate of Return issued to Danmaje and to conduct a fresh election in the affected polling units within 90 days. The new election is to be held in four polling units across the Yabo and Shagari local government areas of the constituency.
The specific polling units identified for the rerun are three in Shagari LGA—Dagawa Maji Kira, Dagawa Mai Zane, Shiyar Magaji, Kesoji Shiyar Hakimi, Jaredi Maji Kira, and Mazoji—and one in Yabo LGA. The tribunal’s decision was supported by Justices Helen N. Hammanjoda and Ali T. Changbo.
