A deadly explosion shook the Nigerian city of Ibadan overnight, resulting in two casualties and 77 injuries across seven suburbs of the populous city. The blast, attributed to explosives stored by illegal miners, struck Bodija, a residential district, on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at approximately 7:45 PM.
Speaking with an anonymous eyewitness, the devastating impact of the explosion was revealed, claiming more than three lives and causing significant property damage. The eyewitness highlighted a history of illegal mining in the area, urging government intervention to hold the miners accountable for obstruction of justice and murder.
A distraught son, whose mother’s home was destroyed, rushed to the hospital where she was admitted after the blast. Pleading for government assistance, he emphasized the critical condition of his mother.
Similarly, a painter expressed concern for his missing boss, indicating the urgency of rescue efforts. Governor Seyi Makinde assured that those responsible for the explosion would face consequences and pledged government support for medical bills, temporary accommodation, and rebuilding lives.
The fallout of the incident, as outlined by Governor Makinde, involves ongoing efforts to provide medical attention, temporary accommodation, and addressing security aspects. A treating doctor highlighted the critical condition of some patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), emphasizing the profound impact on their lives.
The Head of NEMA’s response team attributed the blast to illegal miners and called on security agencies to investigate thoroughly. Penpushing reports collaboration with partner agencies to restore order and assist victims, with ongoing efforts to mobilize additional resources.
President Tinubu urged collaboration between NEMA and the Oyo government to provide immediate relief to victims. Families affected by the blast voiced their distress, emphasizing the need for lasting solutions beyond temporary housing.
Bodija estate Association reported ten missing individuals and challenges in accurately counting casualties due to the presence of dead bodies at the scene. The Punch reported five deaths, 77 injuries, and 58 damaged houses.
Victims shared harrowing experiences, with one family emphasizing the destruction’s profound impact on their lives. Eyewitnesses recounted their escape from the blast, pointing to potential security lapses and expressing suspicions about Malian nationals in the area.
Speaking with an anonymous Doctor that treated some of the victims said some of the victims are still in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) they need to undergo surgery.The Doctor also said some casualty are already been discharged from their hospital.
The Head of NAN,waraba commended Makinde on behalf of the board for his prompt response to the unfortunate incident and for showing his prowess as an engineer, by directing that a structural integrity test be conducted on about 230 buildings in the affected area.
The Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, has expressed sadness over the explosion that rocked some parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Wednesday night.In addition he said “We have ordered a detailed investigation and our officers will work and collaborate with Oyo State Government to know the actual cause.”
A Victim called, Rebecca Opakunbi said she was on her way back from the market when she heard the sound of the explosion. She recalled how she was unable to see clearly but managed to get to her house. “I was coming from the market.people were shouting for help.
An eyewitness as testified that he was surprised when the loud noise sounded and the explosion happened. He said he and other people in his compound had to jump a close-by fence before crossing a river to escape from the explosion.
The Minister of Solid Minerals expressed sadness over the incident and ordered a detailed investigation. Commissioner Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola extended condolences and promised collaboration with Governor Makinde.
In conclusion, there had been calls for increased security, financial and physical support for victims, and swift justice for illegal miners resonate. The government faces the challenge of fulfilling promises and addressing the multifaceted impact of this tragic event.
