In a harrowing incident near Ivanovo, northeast of Moscow, a Russian cargo plane, identified as an Il-76 aircraft, crashed with 15 individuals on board.
According to official reports from the Defense Ministry, the ill-fated flight, which included 8 crew members and 7 passengers, tragically met its demise shortly after take-off on Tuesday. The ministry refrained from confirming the existence of any survivors.
The Defense Ministry’s statement shed light on the calamity, attributing the crash to a distressing development during take-off – a catastrophic engine fire. The ministry emphasized that the severity of the situation was exacerbated by the flames engulfing one of the aircraft’s engines.
Describing the ominous sequence of events, the ministry stated, “One of the plane’s engines appeared to be on fire before the crash.”
The downed aircraft, an Il-76, is a formidable 4-engine heavy-lift transport plane, boasting a legacy of service since the 1970s within the Soviet and subsequently the Russian air force.
