A chaotic situation unfolded at the renowned Banex Plaza phone market in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja on Saturday, leading to clashes between soldiers and traders following a dispute over the sale of a faulty phone. According to reports from Daily Trust, a trader disclosed that the soldiers were targeted after an altercation with some individuals in the market.
The altercation escalated, with a video capturing a confrontation between a group of young men and two soldiers, followed by the men dividing into smaller groups and launching aggressive attacks. Additionally, a civilian was also reported to have been assaulted by the angry mob, although his identity as a soldier remains uncertain. Subsequent footage showed traders securing their shops amid concerns of potential retaliatory actions by the soldiers. As of the time of reporting, the military authorities had not issued a statement regarding the incident.
However, ParallelFact relayed details from the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, confirming that the Commissioner of Police, Benett Igweh, had dispatched officers from the FCT Intelligence Response Team to the scene to address the situation. Adeh stated, “The CP has deployed the Intelligence Response Team to the scene.”
