Lagos, Nigeria — Former Super Eagles defender Mobi Oparaku has called on Nigerian football fans to remain patient and not harshly judge striker Victor Boniface following his recent social media post hinting at international retirement.
The Bayer Leverkusen forward stirred controversy after last Friday’s friendly match against Russia, when he shared a now-deleted message suggesting he was stepping away from the national team. Despite withdrawing the post shortly after, the comment has continued to spark debate among supporters.
Speaking to Brila FM, Oparaku defended the young striker, stressing Boniface’s commitment to the national cause and attributing the remark to possible emotional fatigue.
“Boniface is a player who gives everything on the pitch. This season has been long and mentally exhausting for many players—they just want a break,” Oparaku explained.
He acknowledged that Boniface has yet to fully find his rhythm in the Super Eagles squad but emphasized that the striker’s dedication should not be questioned.
“We shouldn’t be quick to judge. He’s a quality player still trying to settle in with the national team, and I believe he means well,” Oparaku added.
The former Enyimba star urged fans to offer support rather than criticism as the team builds towards future competitions.
