British mixed martial artist Tom Aspinall has won the UFC interim heavyweight championship knocking out Sergei Pavlovich in the main event of UFC 295.
Aspinall claimed the third British champion in history on Saturday night as UFC celebrates its 30th anniversary in Madison Square Garden.
Aspinall said. “I just want to say to everyone at home, if you ever get a chance to do something and you’re scared to do it, you should do it, because there’s a chance it will pay off.”
Jon Jones was scheduled to defend the heavyweight title against division legend Stipe Miocic in the main event of UFC 295,but due to an injury he sustained during training, the battle was called off with just two weeks’ notice.
Aspinall, a potential heavyweight champ, who admitted to being scared faced Pavlovich in a short notice, using clean right hands in the first round and hammer fists to seal the knock him out.
Pavlovich had finished six opponents in a row inside the first round and was not scheduled to fight at UFC 295, but had been training as the official alternate to the heavyweight title fight.
The UFC is hoping to rebook the title fight between Jones and Miocic in 2024 .
