Keffi, Nigeria — Toll operations have resumed at the four plazas along the Keffi-Makurdi highway following a temporary suspension caused by payment processing difficulties.
The disruption, which lasted approximately two hours, was attributed to technical issues affecting electronic transactions. However, normal operations have now been restored, with improvements observed in payment processing efficiency across all toll booths.
Confirming the development, Assistant Plaza Manager of Aboshon Toll Plaza in Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area, Mr. Christian Kure, noted that while the system is now functioning better, a key challenge persists—the lack of bank credit cards among many motorists, particularly commercial drivers, which hampers seamless transactions.
“Many road users, especially commercial drivers, do not have bank credit cards, making electronic payments difficult,” Mr. Kure explained. “This remains a major challenge even as we improve operational efficiency.”
Earlier in the day, toll collection was temporarily halted due to network disruptions, leading to long queues and frustration among motorists. Mr. Kure stated that the decision to suspend operations was necessary to prevent further inconvenience.
Despite the resumption of toll collection, some motorists expressed dissatisfaction, stating they were not adequately informed about the electronic payment requirement before reaching the toll gates.
The tolling system, which officially commenced last Tuesday, has caused delays at the newly inaugurated toll gate in Garaku, with heavy traffic congestion reported. Many drivers, unfamiliar with the new payment system, have called on toll operators to launch a public awareness campaign and increase the number of open lanes to ease traffic flow.
In response, motorists are urging authorities to provide clearer information on the toll payment process and ensure a smoother transition to the electronic tolling system.
