The 66th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government is set to commence on Sunday under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who serves as the Chairperson of the regional bloc.
Key items on the agenda include regional security challenges, particularly ongoing crises in Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The leaders will also review reports from the ECOWAS Council of Ministers and assess progress on critical regional policies.
A significant highlight will be the presentation of a report by Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was tasked during the previous summit to mediate between ECOWAS and the military regimes in the aforementioned countries.
Additionally, discussions will focus on the payment of the community levy by member states and the implementation of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme, which aims to enhance the free movement of goods and people across the sub-region.
The summit is expected to conclude with a communiqué outlining resolutions and the way forward for regional integration and security.
