Tinubu to Commission part of Lagos-Calabar Highway, Today

LagosPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to commission a completed segment of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway today, marking a significant milestone in one of his administration’s flagship infrastructure initiatives under the Renewed Hope agenda.

According to a statement issued by Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji, the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, the commissioning ceremony will take place at Kilometer 8 of the project’s alignment in the Jakande Estate area of Lagos State. The section being inaugurated is part of Phase I, Section I, which covers 30 kilometers of the projected 750-kilometre highway.

The president is also expected to virtually commission several other completed road infrastructure projects and flag off additional works across multiple states. These include the much-anticipated Ibadan–Ife–Ilesha–Akure–Benin Road, which spans Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Edo States; the Nembe–Brass Road in Bayelsa State; the 107-kilometre section of the Enugu–Onitsha Carriageway; and the Abakpa Flyover in Enugu State.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, which dates back to a vision Tinubu conceived over two decades ago during his time as Lagos State Governor, is now being realized as a critical part of Nigeria’s broader transportation transformation. Designed to enhance connectivity among nine coastal states, the road aims to foster regional integration, socio-economic cohesion, and sustainable development across the southern corridor of the country.

“This is a project rooted in visionary leadership and long-term planning,” Umahi noted. “Today, the dream envisioned by the president 27 years ago is taking concrete form, providing proof that the Renewed Hope Agenda is not just a slogan but a reality.”

Highlighting the aesthetic appeal and technical excellence of the Lagos-Calabar project, Umahi described it as a hallmark of modern road architecture and a symbol of infrastructural rebirth in Africa. He added rhetorically, “If the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway looks this magnificent, one can only imagine what the streets of heaven must look like.”

Other projects slated for commissioning or flag-off today include:

  • The dualisation of the East-West Road Section II (Eleme Junction to Ahoada) in Rivers State by Setraco Nigeria Ltd.
  • Rehabilitation and expansion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway (Shagamu to Ibadan segment) by RCC Nigeria Ltd.
  • The reconstruction of the Alesi–Ugep stretch in Cross River by Sermatec Nigeria Ltd.
  • Replacement of the deteriorated Enugu Bridge at New Artisan Market on the Enugu–Port Harcourt Road by CCECC Nigeria Ltd.
  • Construction of a new bridge at Akpoha in Ebonyi State.
  • Rehabilitation of the Enugu–Lokpanta section of the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway.
  • Reconstruction of Ikorodu–Shagamu Road crossing Lagos and Ogun States by Arab Contractors.
  • Upgrading of a 15km portion of the East-West Road from Port Harcourt (Eleme Junction) to Onne Port by RCC Nigeria Ltd.
  • The Lagos–Badagry Expressway expansion from Agbara Junction to the Nigeria–Benin border by CGC Nigeria Ltd.

Today’s series of inaugurations are widely seen as a robust demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to reinvigorating national infrastructure and accelerating development across Nigeria’s regions.
