President Bola Tinubu has called for enhanced collaboration between Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies and the United States’ Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to combat cybercrime, terrorism, and other related offenses.
The President made this appeal during a meeting with FBI Director Christopher Asher Wray at the State House in Abuja.
President Tinubu noted that the FBI Director’s visit underscores the enduring partnership between Nigeria and the United States in tackling financial crimes and terrorism.
“It is an honor to welcome Director Christopher Wray, leader of an organization renowned for its procedural sophistication and excellence. Your visit highlights the significance of the Nigeria-U.S. partnership in law enforcement. It is a recognition of our shared commitment to eradicating crimes locally and globally,” said President Tinubu.
The President assured the FBI Director that his administration prioritizes education as a key tool against poverty, which is often a driver of criminal activities.
“We are diligently working to eradicate terrorism, cybercrimes, and sextortion. I am pleased that numerous agencies dedicated to reducing these crimes are well represented at this meeting,” he added.
Emphasizing that no single country can tackle financial crimes alone, President Tinubu urged the United States to support developing nations with technology and knowledge transfer necessary to address complex international crimes.
FBI Director Christopher Asher Wray affirmed his visit aimed to strengthen the already robust partnership between Nigeria and the United States. He praised President Tinubu for supporting the growing collaboration between various agencies and the FBI to protect citizens of both nations.
“We commend your vision in countering terrorism, a threat not only to the region but also to the United States. Your efforts in re-engineering the role of the Office of the NSA to coordinate counter-terrorism have shown success against ISIS in West Africa and other terrorist groups. We are committed to supporting you in counter-terrorism, cyber-enabled crimes, kidnapping, joint investigations, and intelligence sharing. Our relationship with Nigeria is vital,” Wray concluded.
The meeting was attended by key security chiefs, including National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) Yusuf Magaji Bichi, Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), Chief of Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) Major-General Emmanuel Undiandeye, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Olanipekun Olukoyede, and National Coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC) Major-General Adamu Laka.
