Tinubu Reopens Renovated Abuja Conference Centre

Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially reopened the overhauled Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC), directing all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to pay for the use of the facility in order to guarantee its maintenance and long-term sustainability.

The reopening ceremony took place in Abuja on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. During the event, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, announced that the Centre, originally commissioned in 1991, would now be known as the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre.

President Tinubu recounted his visit to the venue during the 2024 ECOWAS Parliament conference, expressing shock at its dilapidated condition.

“When I came here last year, it was unkempt and unworthy of our national image,” he said. “I told Mr. Wike, ‘This place doesn’t reflect who we are.’ He promised to turn it around—and today, I am very pleased with the outcome.”

Highlighting the strategic significance of the Centre, Tinubu described it as vital to Nigeria’s ambition to serve as a nexus for regional diplomacy, continental commerce, and global cooperation—all aligned with his administration’s Nigeria First vision under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Commending Wike’s leadership, Tinubu said, “Ignore the distractions. You are a transformational leader. Keep up the good work.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio also praised the renovation and the decision to name halls after national leaders, lauding the synergy between Nigeria’s executive, legislative, and judicial branches.

“Previous administrations came here and said nothing,” Akpabio noted. “It took your courage and vision, Mr. President, to initiate this transformation.”

He stressed the importance of financial discipline in sustaining the facility.

“Whether it’s a ministry or an agency, everyone must pay to use this place. No special favours. That’s the only way to preserve this beauty,” he said.
