Tinubu Receives High-Powered Committee’s Report on Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project

President Bola Tinubu has been presented with the report of the High-Powered Presidential Committee (HPPC) concerning Nigeria’s Extended Continental Shelf Project, lauding the expertise and dedication of the committee members in advancing this strategic initiative.

The project, aligned with the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982, seeks to expand Nigeria’s maritime boundaries.

Since Nigeria’s initial submission to extend its continental shelf to the United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) in 2009, experts have been actively engaged in the project.

During the presentation, Professor Larry Awosika, a member of the team and a prominent marine scientist, informed President Tinubu that the United Nations had approved Nigeria’s submission, granting sovereignty over additional square kilometers of maritime territory.

Expressing gratitude for the technical insights provided by Professor Awosika and the Secretary of the committee, Alhaji Aliyu Omar, President Tinubu highlighted the significance of this achievement for Nigeria’s economic and strategic interests.

Surveyor Omar outlined the magnitude of the approved area, approximately 16,300 square kilometers, emphasizing its substantial increase compared to the size of Lagos State.

Options for Nigeria following the approval were presented, including the finalization of registration with the UN Secretary-General or the pursuit of further data acquisition and submission revisions for additional consideration by CLCS.

President Tinubu commended the team’s efforts in securing additional territory for Nigeria through diplomatic channels, noting the importance of avoiding conflict for national interests.

In attendance at the meeting were Ambassador Hassan Tukur, Chairman of the HPPC; Chief of Staff to the President, Dr. Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola.
