Tinubu Pledges Safer Commute in Abuja as Kugbo Bus Terminal Opens

Abuja, Nigeria: President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) that his administration is actively addressing the menace of ‘one-chance’ criminal operations through comprehensive reforms in public transport infrastructure.

The President gave this assurance on Thursday during the official inauguration of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja. Represented at the event by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu stated that the newly commissioned transport terminal, along with the earlier opened Mabushi Terminal, will significantly reduce chaotic commuting and enhance public safety.

“We heard your concerns, we understood your fears, and we acted,” Tinubu said. “With your compliance, you will no longer suffer from one-chance attacks by the roadside.”

The President described the bus terminals as integral to his Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing that the facilities are in line with international standards for sustainable urban transportation. According to him, the terminals promote smart mobility, compact urban living, improved parking management, and stakeholder collaboration — all critical components in transforming city life.

“These terminals meet global best practices and represent a shift towards transit-oriented development. They will not only restore order in public transportation but also help eradicate security concerns that have plagued commuters in the FCT,” he added.

Tinubu highlighted that the development forms part of his broader commitment to modernize Nigeria’s infrastructure, enhance public safety, and improve service delivery through efficient public utilities.

“No nation can progress without the modernization and expansion of critical public infrastructure, particularly in transportation,” he said.

The President also praised the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, for his prudent management of public resources, and extended appreciation to the National Assembly for their continued support.

In his remarks, Minister Wike thanked President Tinubu for his leadership and reaffirmed that the newly inaugurated terminal would be privately managed to ensure sustainability and proper maintenance.

“Government is not known for effective business management,” Wike said. “This terminal will be operated by private individuals who will ensure its functionality and generate revenue for the government. If left in the hands of civil servants or politicians, it may not last beyond two weeks.”

The Kugbo Bus Terminal is expected to play a pivotal role in restructuring public transportation in Abuja, offering a safer, more efficient commuting experience for residents.
