Lagos, Nigeria — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has firmly dismissed criticisms of his 48-member cabinet, maintaining that he has no intention of reducing its size. Speaking during a media chat at his Bourdillon residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, the President defended his decision, citing the necessity and efficiency behind his ministerial appointments.
“I am not prepared to bring down the size of my cabinet,” Tinubu said. “I saw the need when I put them together, and efficiency has been at the core of my selection process.”
The President’s remarks come amid growing calls from critics and concerned citizens who describe his cabinet as “bloated” and question its effectiveness amidst Nigeria’s rising inflation, economic challenges, and security concerns.
Tinubu, however, stood his ground, stating, “I am not ready to shrink the size of my cabinet. I believe in the team I have assembled.”
The President also addressed the controversial removal of the petrol subsidy in May 2023, a move that has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians. Tinubu expressed no regrets, emphasizing that the subsidy removal was a necessary reform to halt economic waste and mismanagement.
“I don’t have any regrets whatsoever in removing the petrol subsidy,” he said. “We were spending our future and deceiving ourselves. Nigeria cannot continue to act like Father Christmas to neighboring countries.”
Since his inauguration in May 2023, Tinubu has faced intense scrutiny over his ministerial appointments. After announcing a 48-member cabinet in August, he has made several adjustments, including reassigning 10 ministers, appointing seven new ones, and dismissing five. The recent creation of a Livestock Ministry has also drawn criticism, with many questioning its necessity.
Despite the clamor for a cabinet reshuffle to improve governance and tackle the country’s challenges, Tinubu remains resolute in his vision, stating that his decisions are guided by the best interests of the nation.
As the country navigates these turbulent times, all eyes remain on the President’s cabinet to deliver on the administration’s promises and drive the necessary reforms for Nigeria’s progress.
