Abuja, Nigeria:President Bola Tinubu has approved the reconstitution of Governing Councils for three key federal universities: the University of Abuja (UNIABUJA), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (NAU).
The announcement comes in the wake of the dissolution of UNIABUJA’s former council in February and the subsequent controversial dismissal of Vice-Chancellor Aisha Maikudi, amid questions regarding her eligibility for the position.
According to an official release, the new Governing Council for UNIABUJA comprises Professor Rosemary Egonmwan (South-South), Dr. Adedeji Adefuye (South-West), Professor Abba Abdulkadir (North-West), and Professor Aminu Dukku (North-East).
For UNN, the council members include Ogbonna Odo (South-East) and Muhammad Tahir (North-West), while NAU’s newly appointed council features Dr. Nkem Okeke (South-East), Ofoke Charles Ugbala (South-East), Dame Amina Yakowa (North-West), and Nojeeb Agunbiade (South-West).
The appointments, reflecting a balanced regional representation, are in line with the federal character principle and mark a new chapter in the governance of the affected institutions.
