President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated three ships and two helicopters for the Nigerian Navy in Lagos, aiming to enhance efforts against crude oil theft and other maritime security issues.
President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kassim Shettima, conducted the ceremony during the opening of the fifth International Maritime Conference and Regional Maritime Exercise 2024 in Lagos. He emphasized the crucial role of the Navy in the nation’s maritime security and affirmed the administration’s support for its operations.
“The Navy is a competent pillar of our maritime environment and deserves every support,” Tinubu stated. He also highlighted the significant contributions of the blue economy to Nigeria’s overall economic growth.
Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle praised the Navy’s professionalism and dedication, which have made it a symbol of national pride. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, acknowledged the Navy’s achievements in safeguarding the nation’s maritime domain, underscoring the event as a testament to collective commitment to strengthening maritime security, trade, and cooperation.
Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, revealed the theme of the conference as “Promoting the Blue Economy in Africa Through International Cooperation for Maritime Security.” He noted that the conference would serve as a platform to develop strategies to address Africa’s maritime security challenges linked to the blue economy.
The event was attended by representatives from 18 countries, including several European nations and the United States, showcasing international cooperation in maritime security.
