FG, Nigeria — The Nigerian government has yet to fulfill its promise of increasing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) allowance to ₦77,000, as corps members received only ₦33,000 for February.
Despite assurances from NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, that the new allowance would take effect in February after the 2025 budget’s passage, the increment remains unimplemented.
Corps members across the country expressed frustration, with many struggling to afford necessities amid soaring inflation.
A corps member in Oyo State lamented, “They told us we would get ₦77,000 this month, and now they have failed again. This government keeps making promises but never delivers.”
Another in Kano decried the situation, saying, “We are serving our country, yet we cannot even afford decent meals. The government knows ₦33,000 is not enough, but they don’t care.”
The Tinubu-led administration has not issued an official explanation for the delay, further deepening concerns about the government’s economic policies.
