Former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, has suggested that there is ample room for dialogue between President Bola Tinubu and the leaders of the Niger coup, as well as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). Speaking in an interview with Arise Television, George emphasized the importance of diplomacy and cautioned against military intervention.
George noted that the ongoing crisis in francophone countries can be traced back to the approach taken by French colonialism, which involved assimilation rather than complete disengagement. He highlighted the significant French military presence in former colonies and urged caution in dealing with the situation in Niger.
Drawing from his experience with ECOMOG, a military force deployed in West Africa, George emphasized the need to prioritize national interests and diplomatic solutions. He warned against hastily resorting to war and emphasized that conflicts can have long-lasting consequences, citing the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war as an example.
George had previously warned President Tinubu against declaring war on Niger and advised him to continue diplomatic efforts. He expressed concern that military intervention could lead to the collapse of ECOWAS and could exacerbate Nigeria’s existing challenges.
He concluded by questioning the potential benefits of engaging in a military conflict with Niger and urged a cautious and thoughtful approach to the situation.
