Tinubu Dispatches Delegation for Pope Francis’ Funeral

Abuja, Nigeria —  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has designated a high-level delegation to represent Nigeria at the funeral of His Holiness, Pope Francis, scheduled to hold on Saturday, April 26, 2025, in Vatican City.

The Nigerian delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, comprises five prominent representatives, reflecting the nation’s deep respect for the late pontiff and its solidarity with the global Catholic community.

Other members of the delegation include Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs; Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria; Archbishop Matthew Hassan Kukah of the Sokoto Diocese; and Archbishop Ignatius Ayua Kaigama of the Abuja Archdiocese.

The passing of Pope Francis on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, marked the end of a papacy widely revered for humility, compassion, and advocacy for the marginalized. His death occurred just a day after participating in Easter Sunday celebrations, making his transition especially symbolic for the Christian faithful.

As part of its assignment, the Nigerian delegation will deliver an official letter of condolence from President Tinubu to the acting leadership of the Vatican, conveying Nigeria’s profound grief and heartfelt sympathies.

In a message earlier released from the Presidency, President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to the late pontiff, describing him as “a humble servant of God, a tireless advocate for the poor, and a spiritual beacon to millions across the world.”

The President further noted that the Pope’s passing, so closely following the commemoration of Christ’s resurrection, reflects a sacred homecoming — a peaceful return to his Maker during a season of hope and renewal.

Thousands of mourners have continued to gather at the Vatican to honour the life and legacy of Pope Francis, whose moral leadership and message of peace transcended global boundaries.
