Tinubu Commissions Naval Assets to Boost Maritime Security

Lagos, Nigeria In a significant move to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned a fleet of advanced Naval platforms, reaffirming the country’s commitment to safeguarding its territorial waters and economic interests.

The commissioning ceremony, held at NNS BEECROFT in Apapa, Lagos, was presided over by the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammad Matawalle, who represented the President.

According to a statement from Matawalle’s media aide, Ahmad Dan-Wudil, the newly acquired assets include three patrol warships—NNS IKOGOSI, NNS FARO, and NNS SHRE—as well as three AW109 Trekker helicopters. In addition, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) will soon be integrated into the Nigerian Navy’s fleet to enhance surveillance operations.

“These platforms are critical force multipliers in the fight against piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime threats,” Matawalle noted. He stressed that the assets would significantly improve the Navy’s interdiction capabilities and overall maritime security, especially in the Gulf of Guinea, a vital corridor for global trade.

The minister commended the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, for his commitment to modernising the Navy. “Under Vice Admiral Ogalla’s leadership, we have seen accelerated progress in fleet development, effectively bridging operational gaps and restoring confidence in our naval strength,” he said.

He also lauded the National Assembly’s bipartisan support in approving funding for the acquisitions, pointing to legislative collaboration as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s broader security strategy.

Dr. Matawalle highlighted the importance of international cooperation in maintaining safety in the Gulf of Guinea. “This region’s security is not Nigeria’s responsibility alone—it is a global concern,” he said, emphasizing the shared duty in maritime protection.

Addressing Naval personnel, Matawalle urged professionalism and national pride. “These assets represent the hopes of the Nigerian people. Your responsibility is to protect this nation’s future with discipline and dedication,” he said.

Following the ceremony, the minister inspected the newly commissioned ships and helicopters, and later observed a live demonstration of the UAVs at the Naval Air Base in Ojo, showcasing the Navy’s advancing Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

This development reinforces Nigeria’s strategic presence in the region and underscores its resolve to protect its sovereignty and maritime economy.
