President Bola Tinubu has stressed the essential role of state governors in driving Nigeria’s development and economic prosperity. During a New Year visit from Vice President Kashim Shettima and members of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) at his Ikoyi residence, Tinubu highlighted the need for federal-state collaboration to address pressing national issues.
Tinubu called for collective action to ensure food security, strengthen local government autonomy, and boost agricultural productivity. He emphasized the critical responsibilities of governors, stating, “You are the key to Nigeria’s progress. The Federal Government manages only 30 to 35% of allocated revenue; the rest is with you. The task lies in your hands.”
Dispelling speculations of disagreements on local government autonomy, Tinubu urged unity and cooperation. “Let us work together to make Nigeria better,” he said.
The President also reflected on his administration’s achievements and expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future. He announced plans to visit Enugu State on January 4 as part of a nationwide tour and acknowledged his recognition as *ThisDAY* newspaper’s “Man of the Year” as a testament to his administration’s progress.
NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazak praised Tinubu’s economic policies, particularly in agriculture, noting tangible results such as a bumper harvest in Jigawa State. “Yes, there is inflation, but economic restructuring is yielding more funding, and we are managing it,” he said.
Abdulrazak assured the President of the governors’ continued support, particularly in improving local security and infrastructure.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from both Tinubu and the governors to foster a unified approach to national development, aiming to create a Nigeria that citizens can take pride in.
