NIGERIA – During a special session of the National Assembly on Thursday to commemorate Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day, President Bola Tinubu presented national honours to several notable Nigerians, including Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah.
While addressing the joint legislative session, the President announced the conferment of prestigious awards such as the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), and Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) to individuals across journalism, activism, governance, and academia.
Among the recipients were Prof. Olatunji Dare, Kunle Ajibade, Nosa Igiebor, Dapo Olorunyomi, Bayo Onanuga, Ayo Obe, Senator Shehu Sani, Governor Uba Sani, human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN), Prof. Shafideen Amuwo, Barr. Luke Aghanenu, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, and others.
Tinubu also gave special recognition to veteran journalist and publisher, Uncle Sam Amuka Pemu, honouring him with the CON award on the eve of his 90th birthday.
This act formed part of a broader initiative to celebrate national heroes on Democracy Day, as well as to honour their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic growth and societal development.
