Tinubu Attribute Stampede to Poor Organization, Indiscipline

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has blamed the recent stampedes in Oyo, Anambra, and Abuja on poor organization and societal indiscipline. Speaking during his first presidential media chat on Monday, Tinubu expressed sadness over the tragic incidents, which claimed multiple lives during palliative distribution events.

“It is very sad that people are not well-organized. We just have to be more disciplined in our society,” he said. The President also extended condolences to families who lost loved ones in the stampedes.

The President emphasized the need for proper planning during charity events to prevent future tragedies. Drawing from his own experiences, Tinubu highlighted that such incidents could be avoided with better organization. “It is good to give, and I have been giving out foodstuffs, commodities, and even envelopes for the last 25 years. I have never experienced such incidents because we are organized and disciplined,” he said.

He further advised against publicizing charity events when resources are insufficient, noting that this could lead to chaos and unnecessary loss of lives. “If you know you don’t have enough to give, don’t attempt to even publicize it,” Tinubu added.

The stampedes in question included a tragic incident in Ibadan where over 30 children lost their lives during a funfair. Similar events occurred in Abuja and Anambra during food distribution exercises, leaving many dead and several others injured.

In response to the incidents, the Inspector General of Police has urged organizers of charity events to collaborate with security agencies to ensure strict adherence to crowd and safety management protocols. Tinubu echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety and maintaining order during such activities.

As Nigerians face increasing hardship, the President’s comments highlight the critical need for effective planning and discipline to avoid further tragedies.
